Chapter Fourteen

Avery

My head spins. There's nothing but darkness.

But then, I came to.

Awake.

Lucid.

Aware.

My heart pounds hard in my chest, reverberating through my entire body. The night air is thick with the scent of pine and earth, and I hear the crunch of gravel beneath the car as it skids to a stop. In a flash, the doors are yanked open, and I am being pulled from the safety of the vehicle.

I widen my eyes in terror as I realize that I am being dragged away by not one, but two werewolves, their claws puncturing painfully into my skin. I struggle to break free, but their grip is unyielding, and I can feel the brute force of them overpowering me.

The world around me becomes a blur of motion as they drag me across the rough terrain, my mind racing with thoughts of escape.

"Let go of me!" I scream. Frantic fear rises through me like arcing lightning.

The night air is cool and dry, and I feel the rough earth and debris scraping my skin as we move swiftly through the forest, the two wolves dragging me along behind them like their kill to be taken to the den.

The pounding of my heart drowns out the sounds of the forest around me, the moonlight illuminating the dark path ahead of us. I try to struggle against them, but it's no use. The wolves don't even register my efforts. They're completely focused on their goal. They’re in charge and I’m simply at their whim.

They drag me further and further, until we reach a dilapidated old warehouse.

The night air is suddenly filled with the shrieks and howls of wolves, and I am thrown inside the crumbling building, my body colliding with the hard earth before I even have time to react.

Two bodies move towards me, and I can see the fire burning in their eyes. The werewolves have powerful, muscular bodies covered in patches of fur, claws that gleam in the moonlight, and sharp, pointed teeth. They are huge and intimidating, their eyes glowing with a menacing, feral intelligence.

Is this what Steel is?

What's going to happen to me?

But before I even have time to consider my next move, one of them is already reaching his hands toward me.

My mind races, and I try to think of a way out of this. But what can I do? I can't fight them!

"Who are you?" I gather my senses and ask, trying to maintain my composure, trying not to show my panic. I can’t show weakness, weakness only causes problems. Weakness confirms me as their prey. "What do you want?"

My heart is pounding so hard in my chest that I can barely breathe. The two werewolves have me pinned to the ground, their claws digging into my skin, when suddenly, a low growl echoes through the forest.

I look up just in time to see a massive black wolf charging towards us, its powerful body exuding raw power. The werewolves holding me freeze in terror, their grip loosening just enough for me to scramble to my feet.
